Spike drops title sponsorship of pro track team

The Spike professional cycling team has lost its title sponsor, according to director Bill Ramsay.

Ramsay’s Cody Racing Inc. and Biotest Laboratories, both of Colorado Springs, Colorado, had a three-year contract to support the pro track-racing team, according to Ramsay.

But Biotest chose to exercise its dissolution option on November 30, and Ramsay is scrambling to find a new title sponsor to rescue his program, which has signed secondary sponsors and athletes for the 2007 season.

“This decision has left the best sprint athletes in America without the professional team and commitment they so desperately need in the new structure of track cycling,” said Ramsay. “To see the first U.S./UCI professional track team struck down in its first year is not acceptable to my staff or me.

“The infrastructure is ready to go through Beijing in 2008, the secondary sponsors are signed and ready, the athletes and staff are in place to start the 2007 season with the World Cup in Los Angeles during January.”

The team boasts a number of Olympians, World Cup medalists and national champions, including Jennie Reed, Giddeon Massie, Katie Compton, Ben Barczewski, Michael Blatchford, Ryan Luttrell, Kevin Selker, Jackie Simes and Kevin Suhr.

Ramsay can be contacted at codyracing@aol.com or (719) 287-0130.
