Press Release: U.S. riders head for 'cross camp in Belgium

Fresh off some excellent performances at U.S. cyclo-cross nationals, Euro ‘Cross Camp IV riders have begun assembling in Belgium to tackle the busiest stretch of the European cyclo-cross season. The enduring vision of the camp is to prepare the best U.S. riders for the world championships in late January and to offer key race experience to the younger riders.

Sixteen riders will attend this year’s camp based on their performances at nationals and during the Crank Brothers U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross. Elite national champion Ryan Trebon (Kona), Barry Wicks (Kona), Jeremy Powers (Jelly Belly), Erik Tonkin (Kona), and Troy Wells (TIAA-CREF) compose the elite men’s group. USGP espoir and U.S. collegiate national champion Jamey Driscoll (Fiordafrutta), Morgan Schmitt (Hagens-Berman), Dan Neyens (Hagens-Berman), Bjorn Selander (Alan), Chance Noble (California Giant Strawberries), and Nick Weighall (Alan) form the U-23’s. USGP and U.S. national junior champion Danny Summerhill (TIAA-CREF), Sean Worsech (Rad Racing), Jerome Townsend (Alan), Jim Lennon (TIAA-CREF), and Steve Fisher (Rad Racing) complete the juniors.

Directed by national cyclo-cross team coach Geoff Proctor, the group will take on some nine races in 12 days with different groups traveling each day to some of the biggest races in international cyclo-cross. The race program includes:

December 23 — Wachtebeke
December 26 — Hofstade WC
December 27 — Tourhout
December 28 — Loenhout GVA
December 29 — Middlekerke
December 31 — Diegem SP
January 1 — Baal GVA
January 2 — St Niklaas
January 3 — Surhuisterveen

"We have a super group this season with two national-champion jerseys and a lot of hungry guys ready to take their level up a notch," said Proctor.
