Here we go again — the poor city boy (assumed), who must be a meat-hating vegetarian (assumed), getting picked on because he bad-mouthed beef (see Monday’s Mailbag: "Burger bashing").
First off, I thought Scott Gordon was joking, or at least half kidding in his letter. Second, steroid use in raising beef livestock is common (see the Science News Online article "Hormones: Here's the Beef").

If you truly believe that "much of the beef consumed today" is steroid/hormone free, please read "Fast Food Nation," by Eric Schlosser. And consider that many countries absolutely refuse to import any American beef, largely due to hormones, steroids and GMO issues.
Though unpleasant, "vegetarian propaganda" is, in this case, correct.
