UCI asks support staff to join riders in signing anti-doping pledge
The UCI on Monday called on team managers, doctors and other support staff to follow the example set by riders and sign a landmark anti-doping pledge.
UCI President Pat McQuaid made the appeal in a letter sent to ProTour cycling team managers, calling on them to sign up by August 1, the federation said in a statement.
Team staff would pledge never to encourage their riders to use illicit substances or to close their eyes on doping cases within their team, the UCI said.
Under the team charter, they would also agree to take measures to avoid doping cases and if necessary to cooperate with anti-doping authorities.
Like the riders, team managers and staff would forfeit the equivalent of a year's wages if they fail to live up to their pledge.
All 189 riders taking part in the Tour de France signed the landmark anti-doping charter just before the start of the race on Saturday.
In a bid for a clean Tour, and to simultaneously weed out anyone linked to the ongoing Operación Puerto doping scandal in Spain, the UCI also asked all the riders in the race to provide a DNA sample.
The riders charter agreed to last month became a pre-condition for taking part in cycling's flagship event this year.
The UCI also called on all teams to ensure that all their other riders sign up, including the ones who are not taking part in the Tour de France
