Heras set his own tempo up the Angliru
Heras set his own tempo up the Angliru

Good morning and welcome to VeloNews.com’s Live Coverage of the 15th stage of the Vuelta a España. Today is the big one, the climb that is likely to define the outcome of the entire race, the 176km ride from Gijón to the mountaintop finish on the Alto de Angliru. We’re going to try something new for our coverage today be joined by Jonathan Vaughters, who is retiring from the Credit Agricole team after a long career in the European peloton. Today’s 176-km stage finishes off with what, in Spain at least, is called the "Hell of the North," and they're not talking about cobbles. There are three rated climbs - the Category 1 Puerto Marabio at 80-km, the Cat. 2 Alto de Tenebredo at 113 km and the Cat. 1 Alto del Cordal at 155 km - before arriving to La Vega at the base of the final 12.9-km "especial" –what the French would call hors categorie -- climb to Angliru. The Angliru road climbs 1200 meters in 12.9 km with an average grade of 9.6 percent with ramps as steep as 23.6 percent. The opening six kilometers of the climb are the easiest. At 7 km, the course hits a steep section with 14-percent grades followed by a very steep section that climbs 400 meters in just three kilometers. The most difficult section is within the final two kilometers of the summit, with one kilometer featuring an average grade of 17.2 percent. The final half-kilometer is relatively flat, giving the winner a chance to straighten his jersey for the finish line photo no doubt.

3:28 p.m. -- Today was marked by another of the Vuelta's signature early breaks. 24 riders escaped from the field at around 15km. By the first climb, the group came apart and three riders Oscar Pereiro (Phonak), Iker Flores (Euskaltel) and Juan Antonio Flecha have come off the front. The have a lead of about two minutes on the remnants of the break and about 6:00 on the main field. 3:34 p.m. Flores has fallen on the descent of the Marabio and has been swept up by the chase group. 3:40 p.m. -- Flecha and Pereiro are now two minutes ahead of the chase group. JonathanVaughters is now joining us.Jonathan Vaughters -- It rains in Asturias all the time, plus the region is known for coal mining , so the road are slick with carbon. The climb will be okay... it's the approach that will be made harder by the rain. 3:47 p.m. -- The two leaders are working their way up the Cat. 2 Alto de Tenebredo. They still have a lead of around 2:15 over the chasers and another five minutes on the main field. So Jonathan, you've been up the Angliru. Can you give us a bit of insight? Jonathan Vaughters -- Most climbs in Asturias are pretty gradual, like the one they're going up now. But the Angrilu is really a paved mtn bike climb. I rode up it while I was on Santa Clara 8 years ago, and I could have walked faster.3:49 p.m. -- One reader writes in to ask if there is anything similar in the U.S. Jonathan Vaughters -- Mount Washington... but the Angrilu is steeper and comes after 160km of racing. 3:55 p.m. --- The peloton is on the Cat. 2 Alto de Tenebredo and already coming apart. Jonathan Vaughters Already coming apart with 60km to go... not a good sign.By the way folks, if you want to send in a question, drop us a line atRosters@7Dogs.com.4:02 -- The two leaders are on their way to the next climb -- the final hurdle before the big one. There are now about 54km remaining. Jonathan, what would a rider in a prime GC spot be doing at this point?

Jonathan Vaughters
-- Eating, drinking... trying to stay calm, and not waste any energy....let the team absorb any attacks all the way to the last possible moment. Right now the peloton is in a long line with Kelme keeping the pace high to negate any attacks from the field. Although it's tough to ride up in the line, like Sevilla is -- you waste a lot of energy -- but if you're the leader you have to be there to assert yourself. 4:09 p.m. -- The two men in front have 50km remaining and have a lead of 2:47 on the chase group of 15. That group includes Zabel and Petacchi, carrying the points battle all the way to the base of the climb. The peloton is another 3:50 behind. Of course all of this will change in 25km when we hit the big climb. Jonathan, do you have predictions for that final climb? Jonathan Vaughters -- I'm a big Sevilla fan. I think he'll defend the jersey well. Heras, Casagrande , or Simoni for the stage, the break will be done by 2km into the climb. I really think that Aitor Gonzalez, may lose some time. 4:15 p.m. -- The two leaders are now 38km to go. They have a lead of 6:30. They are 2:49 ahead of the chase group. Jonathan, do you still believe these two will be caught on the climb?
Jonathan Vaughters --Oh yeah... easy. They would need closer to 12-13 minutes to win. 4:20 p.m. -- We have a question from R. Busby in Portland Oregon: I have heard that USPS and Kelme (perhaps others) are using triple for the L'Angliru. Wouldn't that require a complete change in front derailleurs? Are they using Mtn bike gruppos or the road triple set-ups? Thanks (I am a guy who thinks that a roadie should never use a triple -no mater what! I guess this is a beast of a climb.)Jonathan - Always enjoyed your rides on the big climbs., it is unfortunate Lady Luck didn't ever follow you to France. Thanks. Yes our reporter Andy Hood spoke with the Postal mechanic who was changing out entire drivetrains in preparation for this climb.
Jonathan Vaughters -- Yes, if you don't use a triple on this climb, you end up putting on a 32! By the way, in the peloton right now, the Saeco team is moving to the front. Simoni must be confident, otherwise you don't make your teammates do the work that the leader's team should be doing.
4:27 p.m. -- The leaders are coming up on the penultimate climb, the Cat. 1 Alto del Cordal. The peloton is still about 6:00 back.
4:29 p.m. -- The two leaders are about 2:30 ahead of the chase group and the peloton is just another 2:00 back.
We have a couple of reader questions: You don't mention Beloki at all.He has been quiet till now. Is he saving it for a big move on the mountain, or is he perhaps worn down?
Jonathan Vaughters -- I really think he is too tired to win the Vuelta. I think he'll have trouble today. He is a great bike rider, but remember he had to follow Lance around for most of July.
4:34 p.m. -- The two leaders are near the beginning of the Cat. 1 Alto del Cordal.
Jonathan Vaughters -- This climb should see those advantages come down and the size of the field come down to around forty riders tops.
4:36 p.m. The Saeco team continues to set pace at the front of the main field. We can expect to see some action on this climb as Simoni and others try to gain some advantage before the final climb.
4:40 p.m. -- We have another reader question: We have seen Vande Velde lead Heras at the beginning of big climbs in the same way Heras did for Lance in the Tour. But with the actual speed on these steep climbs being so low, the drafting effect must be very small. Could you explain for us the value of a teammate setting pace on a climb?
Jonathan Vaughters -Well, I don't know if there is any value on a climb so steep a today, but normally on a 7-percent grade we'll be traveling at 20-24kph , and having a teammate to follow keeps a little bit of energy. Every bit counts at this level, even 2 percent makes a difference. Also, if you have your teammate set a hard tempo it keeps accelerations from other riders from having much effect, like a shock absorber. Maybe you're havingyour teammate ride hard to make it as tough as possible for everyone else, so your final punch is over their heads—which is the approach Lance takes.
4:44 p.m. The race is on the slopes of the Alto del Cordal and the Saeco team has shrunk the two leaders' advantage to less than 2:45. The peloton is already sweeping up the members of the chase group.
4:46 p.m. -- Kelme has moved to the front and now Saeco's DiLuca has attacked. He is already catching and passing the remaining riders fromthat chase group. He is now just two minutes behind the two leaders.
4:51 p.m. -- The main field is shrinking as we continue up theAlto del Cordal. There are now about 40 riders left. The two leaders arenow just two minutes ahead of the peloton.
4:56 p.m. -- The peloton are just 1:10 ahead of the peloton. Kelmeis setting pace at the front of the group and the remaining riders of theoriginal break are being pulled back.

5:01 p.m. --
The leaders have crested the climb about one minute aheadof the peloton. We have another reader question: I am a huge USPS fan,and am seriously rooting for Roberto Heras to win another Vuelta. Do youthink that there is a better pure climber in the world, and how will theteam situation at Kelme effect Heras' chances of beating out Sevilla and/orGonzalez?
Jonathan Vaughters -I think today is mano a mano, and the teams won't make much of a difference. If Heras had to defend the jersey, that might be tough. there maybe are a few faster climbers than Heras, but not in a three week tour. He recovers amazingly well, like Lance. Heras may win the day, but Sevilla won't lose too much, and is better in the TT's … if he's not too tired from defending all this time.
4:07 p.m. -- Aitor Osa has bridged to the two leaders. There has been a crash on the descent. It looks like Guido Trentin (8th overall) and Pablo Lastras (15th) were involved.
4:09 p.m. -- Jonathan Vaughters The problem with crashing on a tough climb like this is that the cars are stuck behind the fourth or fifth group and you have to wait five minutes for a bike. Ahead, Osa has slipped off the front and is off on his own... and the rain is starting as we approach the Angliru.
5:14 p.m. -- Osa is on his way to the lower slopes of the climb. Cofidis's David Millar (9th overall) has crashed on the descent, too. He is banged up but he is continuing to ride.
5:15 p.m. -- Osa is about one minute ahead as we begin the final climb. Kelme is setting pace at the front of the peloton, which is down to about 23 riders. Postal's Heras is there. His teammate Vande Velde is there to help.
5:19 p.m. -- The group is beginning to shrink. The group is down to around 20 riders. Heras has Vande Velde there. He is having a remarkable ride this Vuelta.
Jonathan Vaughters He's having a great Vuelta... exceptionally strong and being a completely selfless teammate. You know, he's lost about 8kgs since he turned pro... turning himself into a real climber.
5:23 p.m. -- The rain is really coming down. The group is continuing to shrink, with Kelme at the front -- Sevilla and Gonzalez in second and third. Ahead Osa is 1:03 ahead of the field.
5:27 p.m. -- Osa is now 37 seconds ahead as he reaches the steep part of the climb.
5:29 p.m. -- The men in the lead are being pulled back. Osa is just 30 seconds up. The climbers are on the steeeeep part. Gonzalez is cruising along. Sevilla is struggling. Heras is now flying up on his own. Heras has now attacked and quickly pased Osa! He is in front, racing to the gold jersey?
5:33 p.m. -- It is now Heras in the lead. Gonzalez is about 20 seconds back with Beloki.
5:34 p.m. -- Heras is five km from the top and continues to gain time. He is 24 seconds ahead of Gonzalez and Beloki. Sevilla is now a minute behind.

Jonathan Vaughters
It will be close. He needs 1:42. It will be close. If he hopes to hold the overall after the TT, he'll need 2:40 by the top of this climb. You can see how fresh Heras looks after 14 stages.
5:37 p.m. -- Heras is flying and Gonzalez has cracked and been dropped by Beloki. Heras has 4km to go. He has 40 seconds on Beloki.
Jonathan Vaughters It looks bad for Gonzalez. His cadence has really dropped.
5:39 p.m.-- Heras is 1:30 ahead of Sevilla. Beloki is second at 57 seconds. Gonzalez is still hanging on to third. Iban Mayo and Francesco Casagrande are coming up on him.
Jonathan Vaughters -- Casagrande used a normal two-ring front crank. Over geared on the steep part, but that's probably why he iscoming on now.
5:43 p.m. With 3km to go, Heras is 1:03 ahead of Beloki.
5:44 p.m. -- Heras is on a steep, steep part of the climb. He is 2.5km from the finish. The grade is now around 17 percent.
5:46 p.m. -- Beloki is looking good. He has brought Heras back to within a minute.
5:48 p.m. -- Heras is now within 2km. Casagrande has now moved to third place, passing Gonzalez.
5:49 p.m. Heras is now 1:15 ahead of Beloki. Casagrande is right behind the ONCE man. 5:51 p.m. -- Heras is now closing in on the final kilometer and he is 1:47 ahead of Gonzalez... he'll have the lead tonight if the gap holds.
Jonathan Vaughters -- He really needs more if he wants to hold that through the time trial. Probably 2:40... His cadence is picking up on the easier parts... you can see he is not suffering too much.
5:54 p.m. -. Heras wins!
5:55 p.m. -- Beloki finishes in second at 1:37.
5:56 p.m. -- Heras now has the jersey.
Casagrande and Mayo take third and fourth.
Gonzalez finishes at 2:16. Sevilla finishes at 2:50.
Jonathan, Heras has the jersey. Is his margin enough?
Jonathan Vaughters -- 2:15, 2:16... I don't think so. Kelme has lots of options to make it difficult for Heras.
I think this will be a nail biter between Heras and the Kelme. USPS is not too strong, so defending the lead will be hard. Good luck Christian!Today's results1. Roberto Heras (Sp), U.S. Postal, 176.7km in 5:01:02 (35.21kph),
