Ever wonder just what’s under the boards under your tires when you race on a wooden track? Thanks to the folks at the Home Depot Center and photographer Greg Page, we can give you a sneak peek at a work in progress – the ADT Event Center on the campus of California State University-Dominguez Hills in Carson.
The ADT Event Center, billed as the first and only permanent indoor track of international standard in North America, is scheduled to host USA Cycling’s Junior National Championships June 28–July 3. The actual grand opening will come during the UCI Junior Track World Championships, scheduled July 28-August 1.
The wood surface of the $15 million, 250-meter track, built of Siberian pine from Russia, was engineered and prepared in Germany and shipped to Los Angeles. When completed, an eight-week project requiring 56 workers per day, it will have seating for 2500, plus the ability to add 500 removable seats.
Some other fun facts:
The track is 7 meters wide with a surface of 2000 square meters, a minimal inclination of 13 degrees and a maximal inclination of 45 degrees.
Finishing the track surface will require approximately 250,000 nails and a million hammer blows.
The substructure includes 110,000 pounds of construction wood.
Maximum speed on the track is expected to be 85km/h (53 mph)
