Panel upholds Fuentes suspension
A three-member review panel of the U.S. Arbitration Association and the Court of Arbitration for Sport has unanimously ruled Dave Fuentes committed a doping violation when he tested positive for oxymetholone metabolites at the Redlands Classic on March 25.
The 31-year-old from Berkeley, California, who had 12 wins in 2003, disputed the test results, but the panel found sufficient evidence to recommend a two-yearsuspension from the sport. The panel also recommended that Fuentes's suspension begin the day of the infraction, meaning that he may compete again on March 25, 2006.
In addition, the AAA/CAS Panel ruled that Fuentes forfeits all competitive results occurring on or after March 25, 2004. Fuentes also was fined of 165 Swiss Francs in accordance with UCI rules.
Long-term, high-dose use of oxymetholone, an anabolic steroid used to treat certain types of anemia, has been linked to tumors of the liver, liver cancer and peliosis hepatitis.
Fuentes still has the right to appeal the case to the full CAS court in Switzerland.
