The Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast domestic road team is using new jerseys manufactured from a knit fabric with 47 percent recycled fibers from post-consumer and post-industrial waste. Mt. Borah, which makes the team jerseys, estimates that for every dozen jerseys made with the process, two gallons of gas are saved.

The company says using recycled synthetic fibers is greener than using new natural fibers like bamboo because it requires less energy and fewer toxic chemicals.

Team performance director Jonas Carney said the team is green in other ways: it planed its race season to reduce air and road travel and tries to eat local produce at each race.

Mt. Borah manufactures all of its custom team apparel in Coon Valley, Wisconsin.
