Tick, tick, tick... Voigt reaches Briançon a little too late
Just a day after he lost the yellow jersey to Lance Armstrong, CSC’s Jens Voigt will not get the chance to continue on the Tour de France after he arrived outside the permitted time limit following the 11th stage in to Briançon on Wednesday. Voigt, who wore the yellow jersey on Tuesday after taking the race lead on Sunday, suffered badly in his first day in the race lead on Tuesday which coincided with the first of three days in the Alps.
Voigt could hardly walk after Tuesday's 10th stage from Grenoble to Courchevel. And the big German suffered again on the 11th stage, held over 173km from Courchevel to Briançon but which featured the two unclassified climbs of the Col de la Madeleine and the Col du Galibier.
Voigt, an important element of the CSC team of yellow jersey contender Ivan Basso, finished at 46:43 behind stage winner Alexandre Vinokourov of T-Mobile. Also missing the cut was QuickStep's Kevin Hulsmans, who is an important teammate to Belgian sprinter Tom Boonen but also finished way behind at 48:29.
Boonen, who almost left the race himself on Wednesday when he crashed early on in the stage, is wearing the green jersey for the points classification and is bidding to take it all the way to Paris.
