Whitmore's promoter tries to quash rumors
Throughout his career as promoter of the Whitmore’s Landscaping Super Cross Cup in the Hamptons, Myles Romanow has been battling rumors about his race. “People hear about the celebrities and their mansions in the Hamptons and automatically assume that a hotel room costs, like, five thousand dollars a night. But Hip Hop moguls and television stars aren’t the only people who live here. We still have cops and school bus drivers, house cleaners and guys who pump gas, just like the town you live in. They live in whole communities with normal-priced restaurants and hotels. If you need an affordable place to stay, use BikeReg to email me and we’ll give you the 411. You might have to drive a half hour to get to them, but so what? Most ‘cross and mountain bike races are that far away from any hotel, so it’s not like you’d be doing anything unusual.”
Indeed, driving distance is another rumor Romanow has grown tired of. “I keep hearing how far away my race is. Yeah, it’s a bit further for the guys from Baltimore and DC. But it’s closer to the guys in New York and central Jersey; how come they’re the only ones who are supposed to drive the extra distances? I drove from the Hamptons to Philly for the Wissahickon race, raced the Elites, and got back home that evening in time to tend bar at our restaurant,” he said. “It’s not that big a deal. It’s not another country, and it’s not the end of the world. It’s not even an island, even though it’s called Long Island. It’s a peninsula. In the summer, people come here from New York and Connecticut just to go to the beach for the day, kinda like people go to the Jersey Shore or Ocean City Maryland.”
“You can come here, share a hotel room with a friend for one night, race at least twice and win a Richard Sachs bike. Some people are taking advantage of the housing crash and renting homes. A bunch of people got homes for the weekend for, like, a grand that can sleep 10-12 people. Do the math. I don’t care where the hell you come from, that is downright cheap. ”
