Milram says it will stay

Published: Dec. 5, 2008

After considering an end to its involvement in cycling, German dairy manufacturer Nordmilch announced Friday that it will remain as title sponsor of the Milram team for at least another year.

The company, whose contract with the team expires at the end of 2009, had reportedly consulted with attorneys to explore the possibility of ending its support a year early.

Milram remains the sole German ProTour team after sparkling water distributor Gerolsteiner pulled its support from the cycling team of the same name in light of doping scandals involving its two top riders.

Milram team captain Linus Gerdemann said he was relieved to hear the news.

"I’m really happy to hear this,” Gerdemann said. “I was honestly worried, but I was also hopeful. We need to live up to the trust they’ve expressed in us by this decision.”

"The important thing for us was that the team will be able to race for another year,” said Milram boss, Gerry van Gerwen.

The funding agreement announced Friday continues Nordmilch’s 8 million euro support of the team for at least another year.

The company’s contract expires at the end of 2009, but company officials said they would consider extending the deal, dependent in part on the progress cycling makes in combating doping over the coming year.
