Zabriskie undergoes surgery in Denmark

Dave Zabriskie underwent surgery Saturday morning in Denmark after cutting his wrist in what team officials described as a “fluke accident” after racing in a night-time criterium Friday evening in Denmark.

Team CSC officials said Zabriskie suffered deep cuts to his right wrist after he put his hand through a glass door as he was simply attempting to stop the door from closing too quickly. He was later taken to a local hospital, where doctor’s exams revealed nerve damage.

According to the Team CSC web page, he underwent surgery Saturday morning in the Holstebro Hospital and will have his hand in a cast for one month. Team officials said he might be able to resume training within two weeks.

Zabriskie enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2005, winning stages in the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France. Last fall, he won a stage at the Vuelta a España and finished fifth in the world time trial championships. Zabriskie is the only American credited with stage wins in all three of the world's grand tours.

Zabriskie, 26, became the third American racer to wear the Tour’s yellow jersey when he won the opening time trial ahead of Lance Armstrong. Zabriskie wore the yellow jersey for three days before crashing within 2km of the finish line of the team time trial.

Zabriskie later abandoned the Tour, but was in Paris to celebrate with his teammates CSC success in the 2005 race, which included two riders in the yellow jersey and second overall with Ivan Basso.
