Thecustom 11.9-pound bike on which Tyler Hamilton won the 2005 Mt. WashingtonHillclimb was on display in the Parlee booth (Parlee makes a Tyler HamiltonFoundation model, the proceeds from which go to Hamilton’s foundation).Parlee also showed a carbon bike with sculpted carbon lugs decorated withthe new superlight Alpha Q orange metallic GS-10 fork and matching Orangemetallic panels on the frame. Built up with Lightweight wheels, there washardly a steel part on it, but it was meant to evoke the steel frames ofold with sculpted lugs and painted frame panels. All Parlees can be orderedcustom-sized.
Lake’snew CX-400 road and MX-400 mountain shoes have carbon soles that fullywrap around the heels. The heel cup also has thermoplastic layers thatare heat-moldable, holding the carbon layers to shape with them. So youcan put your shoes in a toaster oven for five minutes or so, put them on,and then mold them to your heel shape, or push out spots where you wantmore room. The uppers are made of kangaroo leather and mesh, and the insolesare Lorica. The road shoe weighs 240 grams, and the mountain shoe weighs340 grams.FSA, after sponsoring CSC for a couple of years, is now offering thesame ceramic bearings it supplies to the team. Bjarne Riis’s squad hadinsisted on ceramic bearings from the outset, and FSA’s subsequent testinghas shown them to save perhaps a second every 3-5 kilometers. And the slowera rider is, the more he or she will save, since mechanical friction playsa larger role relative to air drag the slower you ride. The same holds true when riding in the peloton, since the aerodynamicdrag in there is so much less than on a guy in front, out in the wind.Really amazing was a plastic jockey wheel on display that spun so fastwithout winding down that one thought it had a motor driving it. Rememberwhen we used to care about bearings and how freely our wheels and drivetrainsspun? We have gotten so used to the heavy seals inspired both by mountainbikes and by the standard care method of Euro pro mechanics of blastingbikes with power washers, that we accept sluggishly-turning cranks, etc.;well FSA may be bringing back the old days.
Dedawas practically giggling with excitement about the fact that both of themen’s professional world champions this season were on its aluminum stemsand handlebars. In mountain bike cross country, Julien Absalon won on theEinstein Big N’ bar and stem, and on the road, Tom Boonen took the titleon a Newton stem and bar. Deda’s new Campione bar is a carbon bar but stillretro, due to its classic-shaped round bend to the drops.
TheArimo stem has a longer clamping area with carbon clamping surfaces specificallydesigned to spread the pressure and effectively clamp a carbon handlebar. The Campione’s 31.8mm-diameter clamping area is longer than on most barsas well, to give a more comfortable place for the hands to rest as wellas to mate with the wider clamp of the Arimo.
Hey, who is that Giant deejay?
