Johnson and Bessette tops in Connecticut
Farmington, Connecticut -An a ending as rare as it was exciting,Tim Johnson (Cyclocrossworld.com-Louis Garneau) closed out the Elite Men’srace at ChainBIter 7.0 in Farmington, Conn. with a narrow sprint finishwin over Todd Wells (GT-Hyundai). Stop two on the 2005 Verge New EnglandChampionship Cyclo-Cross Series presented by Cycle-Smart, Farmington’sfinal race came down to the final meters with Johnson leading out Wells, racing in his first UCI categorized event of the year, and just barelyholding off the 2004 mountain bike Olympian.“We were trying to hurt each other the last couple laps,” said Johnson, who took the Verge NECCS overall leader’s jersey off Mark McCormack’s backby virtue of his win and McCormack finishing out of the top five.. “Toddwas flying, he hasn’t missed a beat from the end of his season. I led outthe whole way, you know, ‘When in doubt lead it out.’ He eased back onme, but I had just enough.”Johnson and Wells formed the decisive trio with Under-23 series leaderJesse Anthony (Team Clif Bar) after several laps. Anthony hung on untiltwo-to-go, when he couldn’t maintain the fierce pace of the two formernational champs. Anthony held on for third overall and top U-23, solidifyinghis hold on the U-23 jersey.Newly crowned Canadian National Champion Lyne Bessette (Cyclocrossworld.com-LouisGarneau) chalked up her 11th straight win of the 2005 ‘cross season inthe same fashion as she had the previous 10. Bessette soloed off the frontof the Elite Women’s field during the first lap and never looked back.Charging hard out of every corner and keeping her pace high for the duration,Bessette opened a minute-plus gap within a few laps, more than enough foranother convincing win. Bessette was followed home by Rhonda Mazza (TeamS&M-Vanilla Bicycle) with Maureen Bruno Roy (Independent Fabrication)filling out the top three.Pascal Biussieres (Biogen idec, Auberge La Goéliche) won theB Men’s race, repeating his win from the Verge NECCS opener in Maine. Monterey California - Barry Wicks (Kona) and Ann Fitzsimmons(Velo Bella) both dominated strong Elite fields winning race #3 of theCentral Coast Cyclo Cross Series held in Monterey California.Central California racers were making final preparations for the "bigshow" to hit town as UCI events loom on the horizon less then one weekaway. The Velo Bella USGP of Cyclocross and the GP Clark Natwick USGP Finalswill be quite a spectacle, and this was the last chance for local racersto prepare. A new "Local Boy" created a buzz in the infield as USA's domesticpowerhouse Barry Wicks showed up to compete. Now living locally in Watsonvillethe lean, mean Wicks didn’t disappoint as he bested Andy Jauques-Maynes(Cal Giant Inc.) by 45 seconds after the two riders traded off at the frontfor the first few laps.Jauques-Maynes was racing for the second consecutive day and the fresh-leggedWicks took full advantage, bunny hoping his way to the win. Bouncing Barrywas able to hop over a 2 foot log that most riders dismounted for, andcombined with his aggressive riding and fresh legs he was unbeatable. SimonVickers (Rock Lobster) was third 3:30 back. The Elite Women field saw Ann Fitzsimmons (Velo Bella) ride on the frontfrom the gun and never give up the lead in the 45-minute race. Fitzsimmonsout distanced former World Single Speed champion Stella Carey (Kelly BikeCompany) by 17 seconds at the line. Newly crowned District champion JosieBeggs (Starbucks/Cal Giant) was a solid third only two seconds behind Carey.Top three Elite Men’s and Women’s riders each received an immediatecash payout following the finish. Thus claiming more money for their respectedfinishes then if they were racing a pro cross country NORBA race. And leavingthem all with a smile on their faces as they head into the big weekendof UCI events upcoming in Watsonville and San Francisco.
