A conversation with Cervelo's Simon Gerrans
Note: This interview was conducted several days before Cervélo TestTeam announced its 2009 Tour de France roster, which did not include Simon Gerrans. The Aussie was very surprised, writing on Twitter, “I’m still digesting the news. I’m pretty disappointed.”
A year ago, Simon Gerrans was a rider on the up with the French team Crédit Agricole. In late 2005 and early 2006, his first two pro seasons, he’d won Australia’s biggest stage races, the Herald Sun Tour and the Tour Down Under. His top European results heading into the 2008 Tour de France were stage wins at Criterium International and Route du Sud, both taken earlier that year.
Fast-forward 12 months and Gerrans holds a different position in the ProTour peloton. He’s signed with Cervélo TestTeam, won stages at both the Tour and the Giro d’Italia, and finished in the top-10 at all three of this year’s hilly spring classics, including a 6th-place finish at Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
Following the Giro, Gerrans and his girlfriend Rahna traveled to the United States, where he spent time training at altitude in Aspen, Colorado, with Astana’s Lance Armstrong, Levi Leipheimer and Chris Horner. He also dropped by the VeloNews offices for a video interview with VeloNews managing editor Neal Rogers.
