Even though the September trade shows are over, there are still plenty of new products on the horizon. Based on company press releases, we found the following to fuel our post-Interbike gear lust.
We'll start with the bling - Campagnolo's new clothing and wheels, and then come back to reality with some new lubes from Motorex and some affordable race-proven clothing from Pactimo.
Campy keeps the pressure on
Campagnolo is adding a long sleeve jersey and bib tights to its high-end (and pricey) “11-Speed” clothing range. At the other end of the spectrum, the new Bora One and Hyperion One wheelsets bring much of the same technology from higher priced wheels to a more affordable level, if you can consider $3195 wheels affordable.
Campy’s 11 Speed Long-Sleeve Full Zip Jerseys C682 (white with black highlights) and C683 (black) use a natural technical fabric made by Schoeller with 3XDRY treatment: the outer part of the fabric is water-repellent, while the inner part wicks perspiration. The net objective is to keep the body dry via heat and moisture exchange with the garment’s exterior. “Silver+Aid” side inserts, a fabric woven using pure silver yarns, offer maximum protection against bacteria and static and regulation of body temperature, and reflective details aid visibility. Both jerseys are available in sizes S-3XL, and cost $400.
The new jerseys match the 11 Speed Thermo Jacket C681 ($600, in gold or white, sizes S-3XL), made with a special two-layer construction technique. It's meant to offer extremely high levels of thermal insulation and resistance to water and wind. The outer layer is a breathable waterproof fabric and has special heat-taped seams and zips.
And for the legs, Campy has new 11 Speed Thermo Bib tights C684 (12-panel construction) and C685 (10-panel construction). Both have winter Lycra Revolutional fronts and Thermo Textran protection, while the back is hollow-core winter Lycra Artica, a special fiber that aids heat regulation and protection from the cold, plus light weight, insulation, comfort and breathability. Both models feature the Tech version anatomic TriPro-Pad, flat seam stitching, zippered ankle closure with blocking pull and reflective golden logo and reflective edgings. Sizes range from S- 3XL, and MSRP for both tights is $380.
Campagnolo adds to its wheel range with the Bora One deep-section tubular and Hyperion One clincher wheelsets. The technical characteristics of the new One versions are similar to those of the higher-priced Ultra Two versions, but differ in the materials used for certain components. The new wheels inherit the features of aerodynamics, weight, and performance from the Ultra Two line, but at a lower price than its Ultra Two wheels.
For both wheels, the carbon fiber rims use the same construction as those of the Ultra Two versions. The Bora One rim is 50 mm deep full carbon while the Hyperon One retains a low profile, with an asymmetrical rear rim to improve the wheel’s stiffness and power transmission. The aluminium hubs have been completely redesigned. The burnished aero spokes are radially laced on the front wheel and radial/2-cross on the rear. A Bora One tubular wheelset will cost $2230, and the Hyperon One carbon clincher set is $3195.
Motorex Lube is back in the U.S.
Motorex Oil of Switzerland, which has a popular bike care line worldwide, is now available to cyclists in the USA. Up until now, the company has focused on the motorcycle/powersports market.
The "New Formula" Dry Lube is a biodegradable, fully synthetic oil/wax based chain lubricant for dry conditions that penetrates quickly and forms a surface that protects the chain against dust and dirt. A new 56mL mini spray can is a perfect carry size and the can be refilled from the larger $11.95 300mL spray can. It’s also available in a 100mL dropper bottle for $7.50.
The same applicators and sizes are available for the biodegradable, fully synthetic Motorex Wet Lube (the 100mL dropper costs $7.95, and the 300mL spray costs $12.50). It contains additives that allow it to penetrate quickly and deeply, providing optimum lubrication and outstanding protection against corrosion. It is specially developed for riding conditions where the lubricant has to adhere to the chain for extended periods. The lubricant is highly water repellent, making it ideal for damp and muddy conditions. (Prices for the 56mL spray bottles are to be determined).
And for hubs and other bearing assemblies, Motorex offers the Bike Grease 2000, a fluorescent yellow calcium-based grease with durable lubricating properties. It is a highly water-repellent, extremely pressure resistant grease that provides enhanced resistance to oxidation and aging. The sizes available are a 100g tube ($9.95) and 850g Tub ($24.95).
Pactimo expands: a full line of 2010 clothing on the way
Pactimo clothing, sponsor of Katie Compton for this year’s cyclocross season, is branching out from purely custom team apparel to offer a full line of jerseys and bib shorts for spring 2010. The Colorado-based company has made a point of using technical fabrics in a wide range of styles. Happily, all the technology from the company’s previously team-only apparel will trickle into the retail line, and at very reasonable prices.
The Evergreen jacket is wind and water resistant, with an easy access, waterproof MP3 pocket and reflective detailing for $65. Pactimo’s top of the line Summit Pro bib short ($150) uses Swiss Eschler fabric and an Elastic Interface chamois. The full range of men’s and women’s jerseys and shorts will be available starting as early as December.
