Biography

Klöden turned pro in 1998, two years after placing third in the world under-23 time trial championship. Arguably one of the world’s best stage racers, Klöden has typically ridden in support of others, such as Jan Ullrich and then Alexander Vinokourov at T-Mobile. In fact, when he scored the bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics road race, it was behind fellow German Jan Ullrich and Kazakh Vinokourov — his trade teammates. Even in 2004, when he placed second overall at the Tour de France, he was riding in support of Ullrich, who finished 4th.
